Oh how I love ebay…

November 11, 2008 by jillbarbour

Ebay is officially the jam. It can be a bit of a hunt but, I’ve been able to afford shoes that I’ve been wanting, either a little loved or a sweet knock off brand.

I bought a pair of steve madden “treason” shoes for $17!! They were originally $89. They looked as good as new.

I found a pair of vintage Frye boots for around $70. They are super awesome, even though I get a lot of “where is your horse” jokes. A brand new pair of Frye boots retail around $300

Then I scoured the internet to find some type of boot similar, and finally on ebay I found these for $25 bucks! They are my newest love, can’t wait to wear them!

Lauren & Brandon’s engagement photos

November 9, 2008 by jillbarbour

Well Brad & I took turns taking photos of lil’ sis & her boy. These are some of the ones I remember taking. Brad has some on his site too.

Taking these photos I learned:
1. Downtown Wilmington has endless amounts of cool photo opportunities.
2. My contacts are 3 weeks old & not really working out for me… there is no focus
3. What you think you are taking a picture of may turn out totally different on a computer screen.
4. Lighting is key & we haven’t quite figured out the camera’s flash… or any other camera technicality.
5. This is my new favorite hobby :)

I can't decide if this looks natural or too posed, but I still think it's supa' cute.

The Downside of being an Elementary Ed. Major

November 7, 2008 by jillbarbour

This totally isn’t for me. I came into UNCW thinking that this was really what I wanted to do. I was a peer tutor for 1st graders in High School and was the assistant to the busiest class at c3 for 5 year olds. I looovvved doing that, so I thought hey I can give this a shot. I took a million basics & finally have got to really delve into this major.

I spend time observing a 3rd grade teacher at College Park who is amazing. She has her class always in control, I have never heard them be chaotic. She always has sometime of activity going and has no downtime for the kids which is good. All of her lessons flow & the students learn a lot. She has never had to raise her voice. We also had the chance to talk to a first year teacher. Her class is so bright & colorful. All the posters you can tell she spent a lot of time on. She was talking about the perks of being a 1st year teacher which include: Being able to work until 5:30 p.m. and not have a family to go to, eating cereal all week for dinner & not worrying about having to cook dinner, able to spend a lot of time at home making lessons. She also has spent $429 dollars (in 3 months) on materials she needs for her classroom… She said she also plans on marrying rich (heard that story a million times) since her take home pay is right at $2,000 a month.

I have mad respect for teachers. You are responsible for the well being of 20-30 students all day long. Not only that you have to teach them & they have to learn too! A lot of the time you care more about the kids than even there parents do. You also have to dress nice everyday (which is NOT cheap) and you don’t make hardly anything! I think that teaching is the most unappreciated profession. I think that they are really changing the world, but to be a great teacher you have to be called to it…. I am definitely not.

I’m awkward with people & apparently the same goes with kids. Standing up in front of them teaching a lesson for even just 30 minutes makes me feel nauseous. I can’t even imagine a whole day! I hate dressing up… Lifepoint has taught me jeans are dressy enough. I don’t like making lesson plans.

This is me on the way to teach… black dressy top, knee length pencil skirt, and heels ( It just looks weird & so not me!)

Btw taking pics of the back of your foot is not easy!

So I am on the way to meet with the head of the Elementary Education program to discuss graduating with a degree without having to student teach. I cant spend a whole semester doing what I don’t want to do! So pray for me that this goes well!

Germs Make Me Sick!

November 7, 2008 by jillbarbour

I did my lesson today on germs & how/when/why to wash your hands. I think the lesson was maybe just a BIT too easy for 3rd graders but they broke into cheers when I said “glitter.”

First a little discussion

Then I read this book that is totally from the 80s

Discussion on when to wash hands and then GLITTER

I came around and put a little drop of lotion on their hands & they rubbed that all over, then I sprinkled glitter on their hands. The kids got different color glitter than the other people at their table. Then I had them shake hands. By the end they had a million different colors of glitter on their hands. They thought that was awesome… my classroom teacher did not look too thrilled. After that they found that the only was to get all the “germs” off is by washing their hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds.

All in all it was a fun lesson, but I don’t think they really learned all that much haha. There is always next time.

The upside of being an Elementary Ed. major

I get to play with these in class… can you correctly identify each shape?

When the teacher wasn’t looking I made this on my geo-board. If you can’t tell it is a christmas tree with a star & blue garland.

I get to go to a classroom in an impoverished school 6 hours a week & hang out with the kids, help them learn math facts, literature and just help-out the teacher. Many of our students live with their grandparents. At least 3 students I know of have a dad in jail, most don’t have one at all. The students have to wear uniforms, but a lot of them have holes in their shirts. It’s cool to be able to spend time with them & see how their brains work.

Actually I am on my way to go teach them a lesson on germs. More on that later….

Lazy Saturday

November 1, 2008 by jillbarbour

While realizing we had nothing to do but wait for the family to get here, we decided to do a little photoshoot.  We headed downtown to take a few shots of us since the last photos of us were from the wedding.  One of our friends Jen is a crazy amazing photographer & we were trying to be like her.  Brad’s photos are pretty good, but 9/10 of mine are out of focus.  It was so much fun though! I definitely want to invest in a camera like the canon we used.  I was trying to work it out so don’t judge my blue steel…
